I did a very quick 2 hour clearance this morning.

All the items in the property had been searched through, everything was organized for taking away, rubbish was placed in sacks ready for disposal, nothing of great value to remove and no antiques.

My waste man was about to throw a sack into the truck when something caught my eye.

    "Silver plate" he said.

    "No silver" I said

It sure looked like silver plate with that typical tarnish with fingerprints in it but I saw a mark.

Well I got paid for the job, dumped all the rubbish and returned home.

Half an hour of polishing and this is the result.

John Round , Sheffield, Sterling Silver.

    1908, if I'm not mistaken.

    95grams.

Always do, one mans junk is another mans treasure, or as Yorkshiremen say "Where there's muck, there's money"

The British- and Irish-English phrase where there’s muck, there’s brass (in early use where there’s muck, there’s luck and where there’s muck, there’s money) means that dirty or unpleasant activities can be lucrative.

    Tha knows

Now I have to find out what it was used for.

I'm keeping it, it is going into the silver display cabinet until retirement.

it has a serial number on the back that they usually put on plated items and not Sterling.

Beautiful sterling plate! It looks like it could have been an under plate for another piece. And I wonder why they marked it on the good side instead of the bottom. I would keep that also, it looks rich.

I'd say it was under something else too. Some kind of coaster. I thought champagne at first, but if the watch is a standard size it's too small for that. Champagne glass? If I made something that nice I'd mark it on the front too, to take credit.

Paten plate is a great idea. Never would have thought of that. When I googled Chalice with paten cover, I found several very similar to this plate in both gold and silver with the same types of indents. Would the plate have held the little round hosts (bread)? For the budget minded church that couldn't afford gold.
