    I recently acquired this nautical-themed, spring loaded, hidden compartment antique wooden box. I have edited this post as the experts have spoken. It turns out it is a vintage Japanese puzzle box. Thanks to all who commented.

    Looks to me like a fairly simple Japanese puzzle box, would guess post WWII dating on this one...
