I purchased these framed Sacred Heart prints at the thrift store a few days ago. Each of the 2 panels measure about 4 1/2" wide x 6 1/2" tall and there are no maker marks on them. The frames of the prints had some issues with them so I did a little restoration on them.

This included taking the backs off the prints and removing the glass out of the frames and cleaning the glass and frames. Also, I replaced the backs with new felt and replaced the pins that held them. I think it looks very nice now.

I was wondering how old this was or when it might have been made, where it was made, who made it and if the frame was gold gilded. Thanks in advance for any information.

    Great job Thrifster.:)
Difficult to say, especially when the seller also says "antique Art Nouveau".;)

Thanks Any Jewelry for the compliment. I was thinking that it may have been a little older like late 1800's or early 1900's because of the casting and the way it was gold gilded but I guess not.

I highly doubt they are gilded with gold, doesnt seem cost effective even then for a mass market item,so to speak. That being said, they are lovely and you did a nice job indeed. I thought 1920s-30s upon 1st glance as well, mainly because of the pictures themselves.

    Hi,
Great job on restoring these frames. I have had several imported from Italy that are so similar, they were from the 1950s/60s.

Thanks johnnycb09 and gregsglass for the compliments and replies. The only reason I felt it was possibly gold gilded is because they are coated on a base metal and have retained a very bright finish with age. I usually find that if a brass finish is not coated with a laquer or something like that the finish will tarnish or it gets a patina. Although, I have seen old brass from the middle east retain a bright finish for a long time.

I thought of that too, but I just can't say for sure. I haven't been to Italy or shops selling religious items for years, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were still being made.:(

The frame in the etsy listing looks like it was done in Bronze powder which darkens over time. Your frame could have been a more expensive gilded version or perhaps gilded at a later time. Can you post a close-up of the gilding without the glare?

Mill Cove Treasures, here's a few close-ups of the gilding and the print. I tried to keep most of the glare out. Click on the images to zoom in further for more detail. Thanks

It is difficult to say with 100% certainty from the photographs, however, I think it does appear to be oil gilded.

Mill Cove Treasures, thanks for looking at the additional photographs and what you think they appear to be with oil gilded.
