    Hello,
I just found this in a trift store and was wondering if it is Chinese or Japanese. May I assume it is 19 Century? It has some characters, can someone try to tell me what they say?

Gorgeous, Luis. Yes, Chinese. I love the masks on the shields.
While I think komo did a wonderful job on the translation;), I think @Asian Fever will do a better one.:)

I cannot tell the exact date of this scroll because it is not dated.

This scroll is telling the battle scene of "battle of Sui Yang" (睢阳之战), the battle happened on Jan. lunar calendar, year 757. The battle is a famous battle in the war of An Lushan Rebellion.(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An_Lushan_Rebellion)
The scroll said the general Lei Wanchun led his troops attacked enemies and killed more than 50 enemy generals including bow-shot and killed General Yin Ziqi.

It's beautiful. Not an expert in this kind of thing, but definitely has an older look to my eye.

It looks like might be a watercolor, not a print. Is that correct?

Lucille, I was just going to ask if it is an original gouache, so you're definitely on the right track! :cat:

    Hello,
Thanks to you all for the valuable input. Yes it is a watercolor not a print. The size of the painting itself is 17.7" x 15.2" and it is attached to a larger piece of paper (probably a scroll in the past) that is 30.1" x 17.9". The painting looks fine with some age stains, but it is not thorn. The base paper seems that it had a rough time and may need to be reattached to a cardboard to preserve it.
I think the scene, colors and detail are very beautiful.
Have a great weekend you all!:D

Based on the size of the picture. I think it could possibly a painting used as illustration of a book or poster.

    Hi Luis,
The "scroll" is often the way that Chinese paintings were framed so they could be hung on a wall for decoration or more importantly for contemplation. Scholars would have considered the image and reflected on its meaning or importance.
On yours, you can see the edging of the paper frame on the sides and top and I suspect there probably were round wooden weights on either end. The scroll could be rolled up for safekeeping and to prevent damage. Some scrolls were seriously valuable and treasured. Apart from images, scenes and landscapes, scrolls were often produced with classical sayings (e.g. by Confucius) or to record events or historical occasions (such as yours).
I think Chinese scrolls are undervalued and I have seen dozens of them crammed into corners of antique stores in Hong Kong and China. Very sad, as some are quite gorgeous.
    Enjoy your contemplation. ;)
