    Hi
I recently purchased this little dachshund in an Massachusetts antique store for $12. I’m not sure what is attached to the bottom or why the top is so rough. I’ve found this dachshund as a knife rest, but mine looks a little rougher. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you!

Perhaps that's how it came out of the mold and it simply hasn't been finished.

My mom was wondering about that. I honestly just like dachshunds and thought it might be something cute to stick into a planter. :) I saw the name kayserzinn, and looked it up, saw the knife holders, but didn’t see any like mine. Thank you for the response.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Have seen a LOT of Doxie items, but this little guy’s a new one on me!!!!

    several possibilities.
soldered to another item and then broken off.
handle of a lid that was a one-off of a bowl made for a hunting club - some found with wildboar as grip - and broken off.
in the Kayserzinn book there is no item shown that would fit.
model number is 4490, but small items were not marked with numbers due missing place.

This is correct, it has been metal injection moulded and the pieces left on it are called the sprue.

absolutely uncorrect for Kayserzinn that would never have let such a thing leave the fabrication.

They wouldn't have sold it like that, but a workman may have taken it off the line, or it was a qc reject that someone took home.

Just look up how metal injection moulding is made, this is what pieces look like when the come out of the machines or moulds. The sprues are snapped off and the items filed or barrelled to remove the rough edges.

Remember airfix kits - the pieces come still on the sprue for you to snap off and fit together, it's the same process.

now that's about as low as it gets. Kayserzinn compared with plastic stuff for children.

It's just an industrial process, an incremental development over the years starting with sand casting. Lalique glass is press moulded. The process doesn't negate the artistic input of design, the quality of materials or the handworked finishing of the item, it's just a method of production.

Thank you all for your comments. This is all very interesting. Out of curiosity... If this was an unfinished piece, that shouldn’t have left the production line, would it be worth anything?

I imagine it would be of interest to a collector. I doubt it would be particularly valuable but someone is likely to be interested to see how its made.

for real Kayserzinn collectors it has no value whatsoever.
as an avid collector for 20 years and handling over 200 items by them, besides my private collection of 60 items that I sold 3 years ago, I'd go for the real think and wouldn't bother for such stuff.
