Featured Korean Jarabyeong

  1. Hello again, I come bearing an interesting piece. It's a korean jarabyeong bottle, meant for holding water or alcohol, though with a spout like that I hesitate to put anything in there that I'll be putting near my mouth. It has a really unique shape and I've seen it called a "bottle in the shape of a turtle" online. The seller didn't have anything he could tell me (and of course he listed another piece I want to get online right after I got back :sorry: why is he so far away), but this style of bottle was most common in the 15th and 16th centuries during the Joseon dynasty. I doubt it's *that* old, but it's still a neat piece nonetheless.
I'm not sure if cleaning that rust(?) in the spout is worth it, I would like to use it to store liquids but I would hate to remove something that makes the piece look more aged and authentic. Plus the shape may make cleaning tricky.
    nvm, im leaving, bye :turtle: jbtv.jpg jbb.jpg jbsvlt.jpg spout.jpg jbrightsv.jpg jbsvt.jpg jbtv.jpg nasty.jpg

it is a pretty cool thing, but looks brand spanking new, all that black on the base has been applied to make it look old im afraid

I agree. It is lovely, and I've also seen them described as turtle bottles.
As far as I know the original ones were made of buncheon ware, so grey clay (stoneware?) decorated with dark colours.
I think this is a later piece, a reference to the old jarabyeongs. Not a fake, because it isn't buncheon ware, but a very nice later version, and good quality imo.
I have no idea of the age, but it seems to have been used.

The yellowish stuff looks like limescale to me.
Others can probably advise you better on how to get rid of that, but our late great member Greg (gregsglass) used denture tablets. Thanks to him I have also been succesful in getting rid of limescale that way.
If you want to try that method, just fill it with water to cover the yellow stuff, and pop in a denture tablet. You can repeat it as often as you like.
