LARGE (33" x 11"x 6") LEATHER FACE - AFRICAN?

I found this at a local thrift store yesterday - it is a large face mask? (is it a mask when the back is closed so no face could 'wear' it?)
I was sure it was African or Haitian when I found it, but after looking the artist up I found a couple of other leather art work he's done but they figures were called Indian - could this be a indian face? If not what ethnicity does it represent?
Besides the 2 pieces I found I haven't been able to find anything else on the person - can someone tell me more about him/her?
Can anyone tell me about the mask? I've googled large leather mask & large leather face - some small leather faces came up, but nothing like this came up!

Looks like a wall hanging of some kind, and while I've found a few other pieces with the same signature I can't find anything about the artist either.
