I have acquired an extremely large group of photos. After looking through them all, I believe most are from immediately post-WWII, and most in Okinawa.
Also included is a period copy of the flag raising of Iwo Jima as well as several other nasty photos of bodies and even what appears to be a beheading. (I will not be posting those photos here.) But, I’m wondering if those dozen or so dramatic photos were prints purchased as a “remembrance“ by the soldier. Was such a thing available/done? I ask because the rest of the photos, which appear more candid/casual, seem to be from Okinawa right after the end of the war. Lots of photos of soldiers enjoying them selves, playing baseball, lots of photos of Japanese kids and women.
    Any thoughts?

My Father (and Mother with him) was stationed in Japan after WWII and during the beginning of the Korean war. He was a physician. But he was also an amateur photographer, and made a series of photographs of places and scenes in Japan that Mom assembled into photo albums, carefully labeling each photo. They sold the albums to American soldiers and sailors who did not have the opportunity to make their own collections. He kept the original negatives and prints, but not an example of the completed album. I would like to find one, and have a saved search on ebay looking for one. I don't know if Dad put his name on them, so I am depending on recognizing some of his images. I am sure, though, that he did not include any grisly scenes.

That is what is so curious about certain photos in this collection… Would someone have sold packets of grisly photos to soldiers as a “souvenir“?

So here are the photos that concern me as being professional shots instead of amateur shots taken by the album keeper. But again, were such grisly photos sold to soldiers? (Sorry, I know I’m going against what I said in my original post about not showing them here.)
The flag raising and Japan’s surrender onboard the USS Missouri are professional shots, of course. This does make me wonder whether the battle aftermath photos were part of a souvenir packet. I shall include six photos in this post and another six photos in the next post.
    Does anyone recognize them?
    (Red marks added by me.)

EDIT: Found that this first one is a Joe Rosenthal photo:
 "Albums of Rosenthal prints have sold for tens of thousands of dollars at major auction houses..." :nailbiting:

I expect the photo of the planes is a professional shot, too. Anyone know where it is?
