Large Cast Iron Piece

Discussion in 'Metalware' started by TheAntiqueHobbit, May 28, 2020.

  1. So we found this piece for a good price and my wife is excellent at restoring and seasoning cast iron so we rolled the dice on it.
We don’t really know what we have though. It seems pretty old but the only marks on it are the two Gs, and we can’t find that marking anywhere. Anyone have any idea of the age or of the maker? It’s about two feet long and ten inches wide.

  2. Also to clarify: this is pre-restoration. If anyone gets interested I’ll post pictures of it fixed up after we repair it.

From what I can see I think it's a stove-top griddle. Of course that's just a guess since you did not give measurements.

That’s cool to hear cause we were hoping to use it that way lol. Any idea how to determine its age or if the G G means anything?

As a bonus, you can take it on your next cookout and use over a charcoal grill. We've used a similar one on our annual family picnic for as long as I can recall. Perfect for breakfast sausages.

I would love to see your restoration and discuss the steps please!

Can cast iron be used on a flat, glass, electric stove top?

Mine came with a gas stove my parents had when I was a baby. They gave it to me as a joke gift in the late 90's.

We had a similar one that we used on the big wood stove in the kitchen. I can't remember if it set on top or if two of the sections came out and this slipped in their place. Grandma used it when she was cooking lunch for the farmhands. Hhhmmm, I wonder where it is now? Probably still on the farm in one of the outbuildings.

I just found a wonderful site for cast iron.
    http://www.castironcollector.com/

The GG may not be a maker's mark, but a use coding used by Lodge. Lodge is still in business. So if you really wanted to know you could contact them and ask if it is theirs.
GG is not on this list. I'm guessing maybe "Gas Grill"

At the very bottom of the page a list of letters used.
    http://www.castironcollector.com/numbers.php

    Other Usage of Letters

There is still another use for letters, seen employed extensively by Lodge Manufacturing Co. starting in the late 1950s or early 1960s-- as model designations. Although many are self-explanatory, some are a bit cryptic, unless you happen to have purchased the piece new and had the Lodge labeling or packaging for reference. So, here is a listing of most of them:

    AS - All Star Pan
    AT - Ash Tray Skillet
    B - Breadstick Pan
BE - Bacon & Egg Skillet
    C - Cornstick Pan
    CAF - Camp Fryer

    CC - Combo Cooker, Indoor/Outdoor
    CF - Chicken Fryer
    CK - Country Kettle
    CO - Camp Oven
CP - Fluted Cake Pan (Bundt Pan)
    CP - Cactus Pan
CS - Chef Skillet D - Danish Cake Pan
    DO - Dutch Oven
DOF - Deep Fry Oven w/cover & basket
    DOT - Dutch Oven Trivet
FB - French Bread (2-loaf Vienna Roll Pan)
FBK - Flat Bottomed Straight Kettle
    FF - French Fryer w/basket
    FP - Fish Pan
    FS - Foursome/4-In-1 Skillet Set
    GC - Glass Cover
IC - Iron Cover for Chicken Fryer and Dutch Oven
    LG - Oblong (Long) Griddle
M - Muffin Pan (6-cup Turk Head) MP - Melting Pot

I bought one at a yard sale. Never used, original packaging for $5.

I gave it to my daughter, and she placed it atop two gas burners and uses it all the time. (stove is the typical 4 burner stove)

I love cast iron. Grew up with it, and have grandmother's antiques that I use all the time.

I have a couple of enameled Scandi ones, and of course the newer Cuisinart.

Enjoy your new griddle. They are forever.............

I remember those from when I was quite young (be 80 in August) and they sat into a place made for them on an old wood stove or were used used on top of a gas stove over two burners. When camping, one showed up on the outdoor fire for cooking anything that did not need an edge to keep the food from running off.
