Large French (?!) Part Glazed Terracotta Outdoor Planter/urn

Hi everyone,

First time posting here, please be gentle ;-)

I recently purchased a mixed lot at the local auction and with it came a large garden pot/urn. Its 80cm tall and weighs a tonne. I struggled to lift it into the car so I'd estimate about 60kg.

I was wondering if anyone knows anything about it? I know its part glazed and appears to be french and possibly 19th century?!

I'm basically looking at what people think it might be worth? I have no real need for it, although it is beautiful.

It's nice in it's weathered condition..

We don't really do values here, but if you say where it was found it could help the ' potties' say if it is regional or imported......& that's a start !

 

It looks Provencal. Olive or oil jar shape and a nice one, the weathering is great. That's got to be fifty quid's worth at the least.

 

I agree, it looks Provençal, I have a smaller one which I bought in Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. No idea about the age of yours though

 

Hard to tell, isn't it - that shape and the top glaze are an old form.

 

Yes, a classic type. And condition also has to do with the circumstances it was kept in. Plus this is not really my area of expertise.

Put a plant in it and leave it where you have it on the gravel, it looks wonderful!

 

Thank you all, I did also think Greek maybe too. Outside pots seem hard to place, as (although you don’t do valuations) some seem to go for a few hundred and others of age seem to go for over £1,500. I'd keep it, I love outdoor pots. Get a Strong Person to help.

 

And a hand truck!
