This LOOKS antique. Is it? How can I tell if it is made of real silver? It's tarnished. If I polish it up and it shines, is it silver? Can anyone tell me about this piece? It's very big - 14" tall. Thanks!

These pitchers were made (I believe) during the 60s or 70s, giftware for brides likely. The top will be silver-plate, unless it's marked Sterling, which I highly doubt. The bottom is pressed glass. I think they were made in England. Some of them had a center canister for ice and it kept your wine chilled without diluting it. Otherwise, it was for wine usually, or whatever you wanted to serve from it. While you don't see them everywhere, they are not especially rare or hard to find.

I did a google image search for "vintage silver plate and pressed glass tankard pitcher" and several came up. Ignore the people who say either Antique or Cut Glass. These pitchers are neither. But there are some that have been cleaned and polished and they are very pretty!

It's a claret jug, pieces similar in style to yours date back to at least the 1880s - hard to tell much from your pic, but from what can be seen, looks like silverplate and pressed glass, doubt it has much age or that the mounts are solid silver, but you might want to look for marks and/or post more pics...
