    hi guys

has anyone ever come across this type of cross pendant before, was wondering if they are ever made of a precious metal

its not magnetic, a solid metal, no marks at all

    too heavy for aluminium

925 silver chain has been added for colour comparison

    its huge !!

    any thoughts of info appreciated

Could be stainless steel, chrome plated brass, nickel over brass, Chesaroo. Just my initial reaction.

There are metal weight calculators that you can use to help identify. i.e.:

    https://www.onlinemetals.com/en/weight-calculator

You would need to measure each of the two sections separately. Use Rectangle as the shape, and work through the two results. Ya, it's a bit of work :)

Actually, the first thing that came to mind for me:

Buy a Rare Earth Magnet off eBay, about £3.
    Or,
    Acid testing kit.

    Sabbath one of my faves

I'm sure if I remember rightly it was Ozzys dad who used to make the original Sabbath ones for the band from the factory he worked at night

No idea about Ozzie, but this one looks like aluminum. Maybe polished pewter, it turns up, but solid aluminum is what I'm seeing from here.

crucifix: from Latin cruci fixus meaning "(one) fixed to a cross"

Cross without a body is just a cross. :bored:

*please forgive the Catholic schoolgirl moment*

I'm with @sabre123 on possible materials... if I had to make a wager, I'd wager plate on brass.

Thanks jivvy, I deserve a few hail Marys for that

I always thought it was hell Marys untill I just checked

the hell Marys is a great name for a band though, it's definitely going on my list

It says he is in Michigan and there are no laws requiring precious metals to be marked with type of metal or maker's mark. The OP's cross should be tested for metal type/content,a photo does not tell you anything.

Thank you Holly! :) Odd to not mark it, but that’s just my opinion. :)

No odder than the hundreds of people who mark pieces with just sterling/14K etc. without a registered trademark which is against U.S. law.Although they are are now thinking about allowing pieces to be marked sterling, etc. with a "scribed" maker's name. But if there are 30 maker's named John Doe they can't tell who actually made a piece.

There's a line in that prayer, "blessed is the fruit of thy womb" which I very clearly remember praying as, "blessed is the fruit of thy room."

I always imagined Mary's room as full of purple grapes and oranges.

Then I got older, learned the real words, and things got decidedly weirder. :joyful:
