I bought this large oak and iron wheel recently and wondered if anyone could give me any information about it? I’ve seen them described online (fairly fancifully, I suspect) as ‘chariot wheels’ and ‘medieval,’ neither of which I imagine to be even vaguely the case.

The wheel is clearly old and fairly primitive however, with a square insertion point for an axle. Ironwork somewhat corroded but largely present. Measures around 3 feet in diameter.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Not unlike this one, which describes the wheel as ‘medieval,’ although I won’t be deluding myself about either the description or the value...

I've seen similar in a museum on horse drawn coal bogey's used in coal mines used before mechanical trains.

Ah right, that sounds totally feasible. The three holes around the perimeter could be hand holes, used to push/pull if necessary, perhaps? What sort of timeframe would that put us in?

It could be before the industrial revolution, however they were still using pit ponies into the 1980's so anyones guess.

Thank you Davey, you’ve given me something to work with. I think it’s clearly something other than a standard cartwheel. No aesthetic considerations whatsoever and obviously built to bear a very heavy load. Just need to avoid tetanus now when I wax the thing...

That’s what I’ve heard. Think a pair of gardening gloves might be on the shopping list.
