I got this guy yesterday, because I just can't resist buying more and more and more old Christmas stuff!
I am going to list him as soon as I am confident I know a little about him.
He's a little over 2 feet tall, has a hand painted cloth mask face, and is stuffed with something soft(not excelsior or sawdust), except for his hat, which may be stuffed with paper.
I have found quite a few online - some say he's an antique, some say 1920s, or 30s, or 40s. Most say a store display - but would there be so many available? Those who say where he was made say Germany - but I'm not sure.
    Opinions?

He is a cutie book:) This style is called a 'mask face' Santa, you will see lots out there using that term for searching. I wonder about his stuffing though, could it be shredded foam? The older ones would be stuffed with excelsior or sawdust

Just guessing, but he looks 1930s.

LOL - Just read your description. See you already think possibly 30s.
Yes Germany would be a good bet.

If I think of it I will check my Christmas book at the store today.

Is there an emblem on his boot?

It's not foam - it feels like it might be rolled up wool or other fabric.

I have 2 or 3 books put out by Collector Books on Christmas ornaments and decorations. One might be Schiffer.
One of them has a good section on Santa collectibles.

I've written myself a note to look. Problem will be remembering to read the note:rolleyes:

sounds like it could be Kapok, feels soft and firm when squished:) If Kapok then he is old, whether Germany or elsewhere I don't know. You see most listed as German, but they were also made in the USA

That is great to know. All I came up with was " The Standard Doll Company " and that was in US. Looked like the same face. Thank you.

    So I'm at the store.
Santa Claus Collectibles by David Longest Collector Books 2009
Has a couple of Santas that look similar listed in the chapter Santas Between the wars 1920-30s .
However this book is basically useless. It has pictures, materials used and prices. 8" Santas approx $200-300

Christmas Ornaments and Collectibles by George Johnson Collector Books updated 2008
Page 371 Very similar, (but the clothes appear to be polished cotton as they are shiny) says straw stuffed 25 1/2" American 1920-30.
    200-275.

The clothing on yours looks like wool. Hard to tell from a picture though

    Thanks cluttered.
The clothes are wool flannel or fleece. They are pinned onto the Santa with 1 1/2" common pins, as are the hat and beard. The body is made of the same fabric as the boots - black woven cotton.
Speaking of boots - I haven't seen any others with cotton boots. Their boots were all either patent leather or synthetic plush fleece.
The belt looks like oil cloth.
