Large painting signed Phillips by Samuel George Phillips? Pastel?

I found this large (43.5 x 28.5 w/frame) painting at my favorite thrift store today.
I almost passed it by because I thought it was a print, but someone else said it was a pastel & since it was 75% off the $39.95 after coming from another thrift store owned by the same family (they rotate stuff that hasn't sold), I ended up buying it for only $10.
2 questions - would they put a pastel behind glass?
Looking up the name Phillips , an artist called Samuel George Phillips came up whose works have sold in the $1,000's!
I looked at a couple of his signatures & while most were his full name or S. & his name, I did notice the letter P of Phillips looks similiar to mine?
Could this piece be by Samuel George Phillips? And a painting? (Close up of tree & house I hope will help you)

Yes, very easy to smear/smudge otherwise. Think there's more disagreement about whether to put oil behind glass.

PS - I looked up Samuel George Phillips pastel after Bronwen told me pastels were kept behind glass so they wouldn't get smudged - and found this example attributed to Samuel George Phillips that was signed with only his last name like mine! (the others I found were either spelled out or had the Samuel as a initial)
Are there other examples where he only signed his last name?
