Featured LAYERED Cinnabar Lacquer box

    Hello guys,
    attaching a few photos,
    never came across an item that has these inner Black-Red-Black-Red layers.
    It seems to have a few Cinnabar layers separated by other black layers.
    All the pieces i came across are usually simply red in color and also, the exposed surfaces after the carving is done, is also usually red and has no "inner layers"

    ANY info would be appreciated.

    that's quite something! I was curious too. I found this website that seems to allow for a layered effect. https://www.realorrepro.com/article/Cinnabar
    it seems that you could have different lacquer layers including a cinnabar colored layer and a black one. sorry for no caps, cat is on my lap

    Could it be Japanese? I've seen peonies show up in Japanese art. This is a signed Japanese piece with I think are mums.
