I have been searching for any clue for a long time on this one.... except of a German artist named Meurisse (http://www.denkmalplatz.de/josef-meurisse-aachener-bildhauer/)I couldn't found much. Probably not related to the Belgian Meurisse chocolate, because their logo is a bear. Question was all ready asked on a French forum.... The figure is in white metal and measures 18/31 cm.[IMG]

Not sure if it is the German Josef, maybe another Meurisse? Josef's work looks very expressionist, but he could have worked differently in different stages of his life.
As you remarked, Meurisse is also a Belgian name. Aachen is close to Belgium, the family could originally have come from Belgium.

Your lion would look nice on a black marble plinth.

thanks Any, I saw them on ebay and indeed don't seem to match.
Also the "Christus König" is a mystery to me when you know that J. Meurisse died in 1936 ....

The plaques were probably added later. The style of the sculpture certainly dates from long before 1945.
My guess is it was already there before 1937. It would have been 'Entartete Kunst' during the Nazi rule from 1937 onward, so no one would have commissioned it during that period.

And a prestigious auctioneer too. I know them from Asian art auctions. I always tell my relatives to let my kerises etc be auctioned there, if they don't want them after my demise.
