3 and a half inches tall. Another jumble buy. I’m sure I’ve seen this pattern and background texture before but can’t remember who etc. The letters on the base are JRL. I’m guessing English, my first (though probably wrong) thought Doulton Any ideas please about maker, date? Thank you.

    J. Roth
Joseph Roth of London registered a small number of majolica designs from the years 1879 to 1881. Little else is known about his majolica production or facilities. Recognized pieces of Roth majolica bear the mark ‘J.R.L.’ and include a teapot with a monkey straddling a coconut and a bird’s nest wall pocket. A cheesekeeper and a sardine box bearing Roth marks are also known to have been later produced by Thomas Forester who likely purchased the molds.

Thank you SIS, that monkey teapot description rings a bell. This one seems more clumsily painted than I would have expected and it may be an earlier Roth impressed mark.

Yes, it is Roth. Looks as if there weren’t many registered designs. I’ve messaged the Majolica Society to see if they want pictures for their records, they were pleased to have ones I sent a few months ago of a Skey terrarium I found. Thanks to SIS for finding the reference. Here’s a pic of the marks from a teapot base.
