anyone have an idea what this could be ?

it has a glass dome top

thought it was boulder opal when i saw it, but looking up close i dont think it is, its got more of a velvety look

tiny !, but tiny enough to slip through the net

    any thoughts appreciated

Thomas L Mott did a lot of these with the indented edge.

I quite like the brown, but unfortunate if it is damage

I'll just say it was intentional, it was called the Zorro effect:smug::)

Not all butterfly wing jewellery is made with blue morpho... This one doesn't seem to be damaged, it is another specie and it gives a wonderful boulder opal effect!

That border meant it almost had to be English. I've seen it on more than one British-made pin. It's a great looking piece.

I agree, butterfly wing - and that frame is typical of Mott. The plaques were generally made in Brazil and imported here. You get large trays and pictures too.
