    You don't give a size.

It could be a bible box, chip carving reminiscent of eastern European immigrant work.

    ps - it's pretty nice!

There are some box/carving/brown wood guys who ought to be along shortly. One of them will probably be able to pin it down. It's either older than dirt or made to look that way.

This box has all the earmarks of an early Dutch Friesian carved box. Shallow relief or chip carving popular in 17th -18th century in the Netherlands & Dutch immigrants in America.. Unusual to see the iron bands, where is @Any Jewelry. Where are you, where did you get the box?

I'd guess not American & most likely Dutch, possibly German, I'd guess early 18th century, maybe late 17th. Nice box, pic's are very small so hard to tell much, larger photos would help date it, particularly the hinges, ditto the handle on top which looks like hand forged iron.

I still think it's 19thc going by the patina, still, maybe older ..guess it really doesn't matter, it's still a nice thing.

Yes. I im weak for hand crafted stuff.. and had no idea that it maybe that old and worth something.
In my eyes it was just the time and effort the creator had to put to make one piece like that. And for the price that i gave for it were no questions of buying it or not..

I think it is old, say 1700 ish, + or - 20 years because of the handle on top. If you notice the underside of top, the handle has cleats that are bent over and hammered into the wood to hold it on which probably means, hand forged iron.
Yes, it is worth something although missing lock does hurt value.
It's a classic example of an early Friesian carved box, very nice find, you did well!
