It has an opening on the bottom the same size as the one on the top? From the photo of the bottom I would guess it is cast resin, but very difficult to be sure.

I could see it holding a fertilizer spike for a potted plant.

Could it belong on carousel or music box pole?

I know what I would "like" for it to be (and wish I had one when I was a youngster).

Wouldn't it make a cute pencil sharpener for a child?

The sharpener could be in the top hole and a stopper could be in the bottom to hold the pencil shavings where the child could empty the shavings. ;)

    Size would be helpful.

Appears to be German ceramic, early 1900s.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge, I have posted the size twice but am obviously doing something wrong. The cat is an inch and a half high and just over an inch wide. It is bisque and you have solved my questions. As the cat is yawning I wondered if this held a candle to light the way to a child's bed, or maybe was used as a night light. Your combined knowledge is impressive. Coral
