The border is ~4 1/4" X ~6 7/8"; it was mold-pressed, I think. The deepest part of the high relief image is perhaps as much as 3/8". Up above, central, is a satyr? with 2 serpents, in a trussed arch over a sylvan themed scene having a male an' female human, 3 diminutive gnomes, a horses head, an' a bird. The back is crudely filled with tin, as the panel is very thin in some places; it ads stiffness & some mass. Weight is ~196 grams.
There has to be a mythological tale incorporating all this, but I'm unaware what it may be; your assistance is requested, with thanks for all your comments...an' for lookin' in on my post!

Snow White, the huntsman and 3 of the dwarfs?

In the Ruby Lane version, the rest of the 7 dwarfs are in the corners of the "book plate" :)

A book plate is also the thing you stick/paste into the front of a book to indicate it belongs to you/came from your library: Ex Libris Your Name Here. I can image this as a design for that kind of book plate, especially for one meant for children, but... It is much larger than a standard BP and can't image you'd want anything with the design in relief or made of copper/copper-containing metal pressed inside a closed book. Snow White seems like the best interpretation to me too.

Ahh...so. Mine has been trimmed, which I could tell from the somewhat ragged edges...but I hadn't realized the extent of the missing borders.
Bookplate in their sense of that usage would have been an outside front cover panel, stitched or bradded to the cover board, probably on a book otherwise richly decorated an' embellished.

I get a Wagnerian vibe from it-but Snow White sounds quite plausible. Any guesses as to where this kind of plaque might have gone-fireplace,cabinet,perhaps originally framed ?
