    This this old majolica? Stands 2 1/4" tall. Base measures 3 3/4" x 2 1/2".

Is it a lid? I was just wondering.

Does it have a lip so it could fit inside a bowl? It also look like a lid to me but it's hard to tell that inside edge from the pictures. I don't remember seeing any majolica paperweights like this. The colors look right for an older piece but it doesn't look like a high quality example (e.g. Minton).

There is no lip. Does look nice in person though.

Sorry, I'm going to walk my comments back a bit. I did find a majolica snail paperweight on Pinterest. I'm not very good on Pinterest but if you look for google images of "Palissy snail paperweight" you should turn up the example I saw. It's not identical but it's not far off. I'll dig a little more. I'm not very familiar with Palissy majolica.

Jivvy the research is my favorite

LiveAuctioneers has this one (listed as
Majolica Palissy snail paperweight, 2"h, 3 3/4"w) that sold for $250 in 2015.

    Yes, not an exact match.

Very cute snail! I did look through my Majolica book without finding anything like it. (Of course that sent me back down a rabbit hole looking once again at a piece I've been trying to identify for years;).)

Just wanted to mention that Bernard Palissy lived in the 16th Century and according to this Met Museum information no known pieces of his work survive. So for anything similar to his work, Palissy style is a closer description.:)
