Hi, this poodle is small, about 4 inches tall, and I'm pretty sure made from bronze. There is a mark on the underside which looks to me like Plantation Miss with some additional letters after both words. My searches have come up empty. Maybe I'm reading it wrong? Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

That's a difficult one! After "Miss" it might say Elli, Bell, Ellis(?), etc. It's hard to tell where the letters stop and where the lines representing the dog's fur begin.

Possibly a figurine made to commemorate a standard? poodle's winning some type of big dog show championship?

I saw Elly, could not find a poodle by that name. I see Ellis now.

    Are these letters under Ellis

Interesting. I googled, and there are a few dog shows with Plantation as part of the name.

I keep seeing Plantation Pa Miss Ellie but Google doesn't like it:inpain:

I was wondering if that was lettering on the belly too and it almost looks like 1/1 on a different part of the belly.

good eye cluttered! Yes they are. I can't make them out. My photo area is covered up right now, but I will get some photos a little later.
It does look like 1/1 but I can't read the rest. The photo might help.

Here are some photos of that area, enhanced with contrast. It does look like 1/1. The marks across from that I can't make out at all, and they may just be the fur patterning.

prize show dogs (and horses) often have long names that include the breeding house.

Yup. I think it's the name of the actual dog. Beswick did that, too.

I have sculpted dogs to be cast in bronze though usually life size, so I know a bit about this process. This is likely to have been sculpted in wax, so directly cast from that single sculpted wax with no mould being made to make more wax copies, so one only, hence 1/1. To cast a small solid as in this case would be okay, large pieces in bronze have to be cast as hollow because if you didn't the thinner extremities in the hot metal would cool down at a different rate and would crack and warp.
Plantation likely a show breeders kennel name. Maybe 1980s if it's Miss Ellie.

Thanks everyone. Houseful, very interesting information. I wondered if 1/1 meant that this was the only one made. Is it something that would have been commissioned by the owner or breeder?
