This very hefty ring weighs in at 46 grams! Some websites say this is from Afghanistan while others say South Central Iowa. Possibly signed on the inside? I'm confused with this one. Whatcha think? Should I get an appraisal done?

The ones I found were in Pakistan and listings say made in Pakistan. It is the Pakistani style imo, I can see a Pakistani in traditional dress wearing a chunky flashy ring like this.
They call the style Turkish, btw.:playful: Which makes sense too, it is a bit like modern Turkish Ottoman style women's jewellery.

A lot of sites with Arabic script sell them as well. I can't read Arabic/Urdu/Farsi, but everything I find indicates the Middle East or the Subcontinent.

Btw, I you sure the top part is gold? It looks like brass.
Silver and brass is also the usual combination in modern Ottoman style women's jewellery

No chance of gold atop platinum, I suppose? What would that large stone (an' the small ones while you're at it) be?

Not very likely. It looks like silver and the others like it are also silver.
Vitry would have to test them, but the small ones look like garnets and the big one could be a synthetic stone.

It looks like brass and silver to me. I'd bet the stones are synthetic.

There is a little verdigris showing on the gold colored part (esp in photo #3) which may suggest brass, but verdigris can always spread off of other jewelry if this was kept with other items, so hard to say.

    See what the jeweler says.

I m in with AJ on this, I also have a similar ring laying somewhere here, bought for next to nothing. I always thought about it as Turkish Ottoman style. Mine is silver with brass. The tiny stones in my ring do test as ruby (bad quality), the bigger stone...not sure but I think glass. So in my opinion your stones could be either bad quality but real or glass
