Metal napkin / letter holder? Old vs. new? Design - Griffins?

This piece is not marked. It is brass colored & highly attracted to a magnet. It measures 4 1/8" tall &4 3/8" wide.

So what do you think - old or new? letter or napkin holder? are those griffins on the side?

either or....
would look nice on a mans desk.....or a dining room table .
griifins sounds good....a little deco accent piece.

 

Looks like marks, printing, in those ovals/bat ears on the back - the last pic. I have tried making out the writing by editing the pic with no luck. Using a loop can you make out the writing?

No markings or letters. It is just textured.

That is a distinct possibility as this piece came in the same box lot as the little repoussé dish & an Iroquois Whimsy box I sold a few weeks back.
