    Hi folks

this was the metronome i picked up at christmas (and couldn't work out why it was set to lunatic asylum :wacky:)

turns out its missing the sliding weight to the bar

(have just ordered a replacement, so should be ready to go mellow soon)

i'm guessing quite an oldie (love the shape) (wind up)

    Mahogany ? French ?

It is a Maëlzel. Maëlzel was an inventor and the first to manufacture metronomes on a large scale. Although he lived in several countries, including his native Germany, I believe he started his metronome factory in Paris. So I guess yours is French made.

i'm thinking the pencil 158 can't be the serial number from the guide, as it doesn't strike me as that old, but seems like their should be one on mine, if that isn't it

i'm guessing the 158 or 58 is the model number maybe then

the plaque feels like aluminium (so might help date)

tried to get a picture of all the speed names - hey PRESTO :playful:;)

'Grave' means serious, so slow.:pompous: You can also tell because below are the music terms leading up to 'grave', like andante and largo.

Gee, I got one sitting on my (lonely) piano now! It's not that old -- got it in the early 60s, but the shape is the same, it's a wind-up mechanism and was well used for a number of years. Still works! Go anti-digital, LOL!

I have one of the same type, although not this maker, that was my mother's. She would have been taking piano lessons in the 1930s.

The higher up the weight is, the slower the speed. Mesmerizing speed is probably in the andantino - andante range.
