komokwa The Truth is out there...!

I just could not leave these at the 2nd hand store..
7 bowls....2 sizes...... Solid TEAK.......the grain...what you would expect from old wood !!
    Approx 6 wide and 3 14 to 3 1/2 tall.... Labels intact !
Tourist items I guess.......or from a food set......
but Teak has oils....so I wouldn't think these were actually for eating from??? !!!

They're tacky.oily to the touch....more inside than outside.

    Any idea of actual age???
& how best to clean them and bring out the grain to it's highest beauty ???

Salad bowls? Probably 70s, and I agree, beautiful wood.
Export items, sold in shops for tableware etc.

Tacky oily, sounds like added oil. What do they smell of?
Maybe a wash with dishwashing liquid, and some food safe oil to bring back the grain and sheen?

they don't really smell like anything....but wood.....& maybe a little spicy at that...maybe..

When I get an old, tacky wooden bowl first I clean it with the rough part of a sponge using dish soap and water, then baking soda and water made into a paste. The paste removes all the old, sticky oil. When completely dry (it may look a bit dried out but that's OK) I give it a light oiling with mineral oil, it's neutral, won't go rancid and is safe for bowls that will be used for food.

I think you can, look like salad bowls?

On that Bowl Blog above, that is EXACTLY why people get rid of them, easily fixed so blog claims.

My mother had a salad bowl set like that in the late '60s/'70s.

I too ate off wood salad bowls and steak plank trays when younger.....but these were always hard woods........... I'll eat off maple any day.....I just thought that Teak was more oil laden ....like cedar....& not the best for food..!

But ..maybe I was wrong ! OY VEY !!!!

Nice bowls. I bought a large lot of wooden serving pieces, stoneware, and Pyrex glass at an estate auction over the summer. Super cheap. Here’s the wood portion of the lot. Some is teak. My mom claimed the tiger like bowl immediately. Her and my aunt took four total. They left me the big one in the final photo which was my fav after the tiger bowl. The rest will be sold. The set of four matching bowls already did. 196280C6-CFD5-4A10-9A11-828DFFAF3049.jpeg 1A6E3869-CDB5-4ADA-8820-A05D4A26A7E6.jpeg 6A38D674-0AB5-4787-933E-9E2EBB4D18ED.jpeg

I have a set of stainless sugar and creamer with tray - new in box with teak handles. Probably the same era. Those teak pieces aren't valued as much as they were, but that could be changing.

Beautiful bowls! I would have picked them up in a minute.

Some of the oily tackiness may be from leftover salad oil. Over time and use you have to really clean these bowls once in awhile. A lot of people just went, Yuck!, and gave them to GW (especially if they were also covered in cabinet dust). And I remember my mom had a set of teak bowls, we ate from them and they always felt a little oily.
