I purchased this at an antique store in Niles, Michigan. The tag was labeled Italian/Spanish, I am skeptical of both. It looks more Eastern European to me, maybe Hungary? Looks like it is dated 1966. I think the letters before the last name might be Sc., like on the old engravings. Any help with identifying the region and the last name would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, the costume is Hungarian. Interesting work.

I think the title is A Peasant, S(eriagraph)/100. The writing in the plate doesn't look Italian, but I have no idea what it is. A pile of Hungarians had to bail in the 50s, and it wouldn't surprise me if one of the refugees was an artist who ended up working here.

Does the writing "hangy Koz" mean something?

In Hungarian it might be a piece of something that does. Not a language I read at all.

Maybe it's showing a Romani, and that's his caravan.

I showed this to a friend, Hajni who lives in Hungary. She is not familiar with the drawing but say that the title of the drawing is "A paraszt " which means The farmer. She will let us know if she can find anything else.

Hey Thanks! That is really nice of you to do that. I found an artist that worked in a similar style named Jonas Kass, but the signature doesn’t match up.

Yes, it is farmer's or peasant dress, not Roma.
Although Romani often adopted bits and pieces of local dress, it was never a carbon copy, and they always had their very own dress sense added to it.

For example, our Sinti (Romani) ladies often still wear stylish black, the traditional northern Sintezza way. Usually fashionable, but mostly black.
The southern Sintezzas used to wear beautiful blue tones. I hope they still do.
