This has been in the family for at least 60 years. Oil painting on canvas from either Germany or UK. This board seems to work magic identifying painters so thought I would give it a shot. Not selling just curious - ES initials. Thanks!! 4236390D-8C68-4E81-A39E-5BFF1A6C6A5D.jpeg E0A2D053-87E7-4870-A764-C9EDC534B33D.jpeg

Reason I ask is a reverse google search turned up a bad copy from the 1960s. Thought either it was known to somebody at the time or could just be from a photograph or an art class or something.

Here is the painting I found on Etsy. Not a bad painting exactly but would be made at least 30 or 40 years later. 50375C8D-B413-42CE-90CB-5E72D4520094.jpeg

Would you be kind enough to post the Etsy link? And why do you think it was "30 or 40 years" later?

At least 60 years old means it dates to at least the 1960s. To my eye, an English fishing village, perhaps Cornwall.

My mom remembers it being in her house since she was little so at least 60 something years we know for sure in the family.

I'm confused re dating. Has it been in the family for at least 80 or 90 years (since the 1930s or 1940s?) Or has it been in the family for at least 60 years (since the 1960s?)

And what evidence is there that the Mario version dates to the 1960s?

There appear to be some pencil markings on the stretcher's back. Would you post a close-up photograph please?

Sorry yes was not very clear. We are sure the painting has been with us since the early sixties -late fifties because my mom actually remembers it. Before that are just stories that it was brought back from Europe in the 30s or 40s maybe but don’t know for sure. The only dating on the Etsy painting is what is on their site and the seller doesn’t have any additional info.

Well, that is a mystery. Why don't you contact the Etsy seller and find out where/when/how she came across her copy?
