    Hi Wolf........Welcome.

I, unfortunately cannot help, but others will be along to take a peek.

I've come across such an item, but how it was used I don't know.

I think it might be a product of India?

Size? I am seeing similar called cricket boxes, incense boxes, betel nut boxes, etc. I do think India and with some age but not ancient. Seems that every pierced box gets called a cricket box by some people. Would think more for scent or, as suggested, warming. Someone with more knowledge of Indian culture could probably give a better answer than I have.

Thanks. It's been sold now so I suppose it wouldn't violate any rule to say it is/was on etsy. After thinking about it more deeply, studying the photos, it clearly isn't suitable for burning incense, as it isn't thick enough for doing so.

I was looking specifically for a censer to burn frankincense on charcoal.

Frankly, the seller never got back to me so obviously didn't care, and I think they don't really know what it is. I think it's a cricket box, right enough.
