Mo Bjornestad - any ideas - leather cases one fitting over the other

looks like a traditional cigar case....

 

Wonderful find - but my grandmother's case has an opening of about a quarter inch by two inches.

I worked in a woodworking shop in high school and measuring and setting up for cuts was the boss's job -
have done the set up for the boss assigned another high school kid to do the cut about half of shop cart of lumber.

You guessed it - he cut each piece about in half.

We had a lot of fun -

Nice to have the BritishMonarchy motto there. Could be military use perhaps.
