    Hi,
I really like this one and will be keeping it. Artist signed Schmal 75, 11" x 18" . It is oil and very thick in areas, some layers/areas are almost 3/4" high. Not sure what it is painted on but it is glued onto what appears to be textured wallpaper or shelf liner. Bad frame so I will switch it when I find the right one.
What I'm wondering is if there is a term for this type of painting? The layers and how it appears messy/blurry up close but from a distance it is clear - hope this makes sense.
    Thanks for any information:)

The word you're searching for is "impasto."

Wow, you are amazing! Thank-you very much sis:) I hadn't bothered to look for the artist as I'm keeping it but great to see others out there! I too thought Schmal but with signatures you never know.
Interesting to see the other 2 were sold on the east coast and this one is here on the west coast.
I wonder if that is the first name on the back in your first link - will see if I can figure it out.

If I may add a Schmall contribution, it looks like Naïve art. Maybe with influence of late modernism and colourism.

Gluing it to canvas/textured paper may have been necessary if the original canvas/cardboard was damaged or too old. It's possible that due to heavy impasto painting it's original canvas or cardboard was not rigid enough to hold the heavy paint. Or simply to match the painting to a new frame.

Thank-you Antart:) I imagine with all the paint it would be heavy.

Hi there! I live on the west coast of BC and just found a painting by the same artist. The signature is done in the same red paint in the lower right and signed exactly the same on the back - 'Schmal '75'. I've got the same funky frame which I think is original to the painting. I believe the artist has painted directly on to the linen fabric as you can see the texture and unpainted bits come through the image.
As it looks like both our paintings are European street scenes - could the artist have been a street painter? Schmal painting.jpg Personally I like the style - it would be interesting to find out more about him/her!

Salve, ho la stessa opera su tela formato 19x24, dipinta con colori diversi, non datata. L'artista è Oscar Schmal, nato a Brünn (Yugoslavia) nel 1904 e morto a Vienna (Austria) nel 1976.
