Could it use a very gentle cleaning?

@clutteredcloset49 - may know how to avoid damages to spruce it up?

Not sure about avoiding damages. I'm always amazed at how long things have been around until they get into my hands. LOL.

Is the pink material just tucked into the box and not glued in?

Personally, I would just wash it. Don't soak it, as you don't want to loosen the plaster holding the metal trim.
I keep a squirt bottle of 50/50 ammonia and water for things like this. Then just soap up and rinse quickly. Warm water, not hot.

Looks older than the 1950s. Possibly German. Looks like it has a transferred decal with gold paint and enamel highlights.

    Very pretty.

It looks like it might be a pillow. Is it?

If just a piece of folded fabric.
I would wash it in cool water with Ivory or whatever you use for hand washables. Line dry, iron from the back side.

Take a piece of cardboard like from the back of a legal pad. Cut to fit inside the box, leaving a little extra space for fabric. Glue a thin piece of pillow foam to the cardboard. Take a piece of velvet, satin, or whatever fabric you chose, cover over the pillow and fold to the back of the cardboard, gluing down the edges. You will have nicer corners if you cut darts at each corner, so there isn't any bulk at the fold over.

Instead of pillow foam, which might be too thick, you could just use folded cotton. You are just trying to recreate the pillowing with out too much bulk.

You could even forget the padding and just cover the cardboard with fabric.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

I thought more French when I looked at it but WDIK!!!! If that's transfer, wouldn't you want to be careful with any ammonia + cleaning???? Just a question......

    Edit: And still very pretty!!!

Thanks Cluttered, I've ruined so many porcelain pieces by cleaning them, so I really do appreciate the discussions on how to clean the gold gilt and transfer stickers.

If this were *my* trinket box, I'd want to gently clean the previous owner's use off of it. I would probably just keep the little cushion at the bottom and hand wash it for use. Komo, I realize you will probably want to keep your mother's trinket box, but if you decide to sell it, let me know please..

    That is lovely.
I have had good results over the years using baby wipes to wipe down delicate items, tho I can't recall anything like this. If a baby wipe is safe enough for a baby's bum, its safe enough for lots of other things too (tho not pearls, coral, etc.)....
