    DSC_1152.JPG DSC_1153.JPG DSC_1155.JPG My sister-in-law also brought me these, both by R. Blackinton. I assume 1920's?
They are both sterling, and the mesh purse measures 4 inches wide, by 6.5 inches from the clasp to the dangly beads.
I'm not sure what the ohter one is. Is it for calling cards? It's too small for a cigarette case. It's 2.5 by 3.5 inches.

In the first photo, the color of the item on the left is silver. It shows sort of yellowish due to the lighting.

They're Art Nouveau. A bit earlier. The one is for calling cards. A woman wouldn't be smoking then.

I thought it might be for calling cards, as it is much too small for cigarettes. And I suspect women did smoke, but maybe not in public...

It would have been the rare woman of a certain class.

These are family pieces, so being Art Nouveau would indicate that they belonged to my great-grandmother, Augusta Sharpe Jordan (1876 - 1959). She was a beautiful woman. gran.JPG

    I agree, Art Nouveau designs.

By the 20s some avantgarde women smoked, those were the Roaring Twenties. Some women also smoked before the 20s.
    Yes, she was.:)

If she was born in 1876, those may have belonged to her mother.

That may well be her high school graduation photograph. That gathered waist probably puts your photograph into the late 1890s. Timing would be right.

This photo was taken in San Francisco, while my great-grandfather was stationed at Angel Island with the Marine Hospital Service. They married in 1895, I think, and my grandmother was born in 1897. They returned to Birmingham by 1899 or 1900.

She's wearing a purse on her waist, but I don't think it's the same one I have. g2.jpg
