I thought this was really cool and i think i know what is is for serving.
The dish is 12 1/2" long.
With an additional second dish ill show in a bit.

Now the second dish is smaller but has the same painting and same mark on the bottom.

On FB Nippon collectors say it is for slices citrus fruit and she small one is for the seeds. Maybe?

I have seen listings that call these celery platters with individual salt plates.

Since people do not usually serve celery sticks with individual open salt dishes I think sellers are resorting to offering different uses for these items. Also, as in your case, there is only 1 salt dish left from likely a set of 8. So someone who does not know that at one time it was very popular to serve celery this way would come up with an explanation such as the hair brush & pins idea.

This is the real backmark, I must bring your attention to the Stem and the two leaves at the base of the OP's celery tray backmark, they are clearly a fake. On the real one they are very defined.

    Dry your eye's Bulldog.

It takes time to do that research, It is not a personal attack on your Celery Tray and certainly not a criticism in anyway on you as a person.

Maybe someone with more knowledge and experience with Nippon might chime in and explain the difference in the backmarks and the blurred and missing stems on the OPS celery tray backmark and why that is not an issue.

I dont feel i have to vindicate my opinion. I simply used the word Concern and gave strong reasons and backed it up with research. It is open to discussion.

This roadshow collectibles guy clearly demonstrates great skill and experience and has no issue delcaring his nippon item fake.

The value seems minimal, either way.
