What does it mean in your opinion when it comes to furniture and decorative objects?

Absolutely nothing...............there could be two of the same common, mundane object - one worn to pieces and practically unrecognizable and the other in "mint" (shudder) condition. The worn, tattered one belonged to George Washington, used at the battle of Trenton, the other to an unknown "nobody" (one of thousands). Which is museum quality????

"Quality", as a qualifier has no place in that sort of judgement in my opinion. The qualifiers should be related solely to it historical or esthetic traits within the context of the collection. And of course it depends on the museum...............A Goya is not museum quality to the International Museum of Abandoned Tufted Pink Toilet Seats....................

Items of the finest quality in workmanship and design, worthy of being in a museum. That said, the term gets bandied about and applied to things not worthy of most museums, IMHO. Consequently, it is really a rather meaningless term but may be an effective marketing ploy.

Keep in mind that museums often include items that are not the finest but representative of a culture or a particular narrative they are attempting to portray. I would, for the most part, not use the term museum quality in conjunction with these items. Also keep in mind that what is chosen for a museum is based on a curatorial perspective. What a particular curator chooses may not be what another in a different time and place would choose.

I also don't imagine a museum piece being re-finished or heavily restored. Tasteful repairs (old ones at least) are a different story.

I like "worthy of being in a museum, based upon intrinsic or provenance characteristics...

Then again, there's a Museum of Bad Art...

It used to be "worthy of being in a fine museum collection". These days ... file with "rare" and "unique" mass-produced items that were "one of a kind" at the yard sale.

    Hi,
We had a Museum of the Dog years ago in NYC. It was a small store front. It had a 1917 dog license tag, three WWll dog collars and perhaps a dozen photographs of famous dogs. Turns out the guy operating it did not charge but was using the cover not to pay taxes. It closed about three months of being opened.

If you are ever really bored in Amsterdam, stop by the Venustempel (Sex Museum), in the Damrak, just down from the train station...............
