Mystery alabaster lidded bowl

    I came across an old alabaster bowl with a wooden and alabaster lid. The lid appears to fit well and looks like it has been painted in at least 3 colours in the past.
    My feeling is that the lid is likely to have been a replacement/addition at some point. Perhaps the original got broken but the knob survived?
    Just thought I would check in case I have that wrong and it's meant to go together. If so, would it have been painted or stripped originally. Any help you can give would be welcome.
