IMG_3928.jpeg IMG_3929.jpeg IMG_3930.jpeg I acquired this beautiful hand-painted miniature. Bonaparte’s gaze particularly caught my attention. It is signed D. David.

Do you think it’s from the 19th century, or more likely the 20th?

    Does anyone know the artist?

Sorry Jose-I agree w/ Komo that it's a 20th century piece and sadly not too well executed. There's a number of these repros/forgeries in the marketplace-some are actually superb.

20th century decor piece. It's 20th in style, execution/materials, signature convention, framing, and that backing.

I agree. But overall it's well done. Or not so well?

Hmm. So keep in mind art and decorative objects are subjective. If you love it, don't let anyone's opinion change that, because it only matters how you feel.

I would say it is decent for a decor piece. I would not say it was well done for a miniature. You can see a ton of authentic 19th c miniature examples in The Gibbes Museum digital archive to learn from and understand what I'm comparing yours to.

But is it fair to compare a piece you own to a masterwork in a museum? That's why it only matters if you love it. :D

I agree, 20th century decor. Hand painted, but the painter would have made a series of these Napoleons, as well as series of other historic figures. These used to be popular in the 1950s-60s.
