I think this may be Santo Domingo pottery...any other opinions? Missing a handle and some paint loss/fading. Stands 11 1/2" tall.

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

I frequently can't tell Santo Domingo from Zuni and Zia, BUT... I think this is the only item (from any of the three) that I have seen, that has handles like that. Much more common is the double mouthed type.

Is there a story behind it that made you think Santo Domingo?

Taupou, do you know if pottery from that era retains value even when damaged?

Early pueblo pottery had design patterns that were distinctive to each pueblo. The clay itself was also local, and differed from pueblo to pueblo. Learning to tell the difference takes some time, a lot of reading, and hand-on experience.

My only advice would be don't give up, don't use the internet as a reference (unless you limit yourself to reputable galleries (Andrea Fisher, Adobe galleries come to mind) or museums specializing in Southwest art, and buy some good reference books, such as "Southwestern Pottery, Anasazi to Zuni" by Allan Hayes and John Blom.

For Santo Domingo pottery in particular, see "A River Apart: The Pottery of Cochiti & Santo Domingo Pueblos" edited by Valerie Verzuh.

Speaking for myself, that is exactly what I was doing WRONG... getting confused by sundry online shops and collections... I made notes on those sources. Thanks!

I can give a thumbs up to the Hayes/Blom book.
