I found this neat buckle today but know nothing about it. There are no markings. It has very nice carving and filigree. I don’t think the materials are very precious, but it’s a neat piece. There are tiny machine screws behind the figurines.

Can anyone shine a light on the history of this item?

EDIT: I have uploaded a second photo to show the back.

It is gorgeous. It is a mishmash of styles, in the general Historic Revival style.
The Historic Revival style was hugely popular in Germany and the Austro-Hungarian lands from ca 1840 onward, and it could have been made in that general region in the late 19th century, maybe very early 20th century.

If it is non-precious, as you think, the metal is probably gilt brass and the stones glass. The two figures could be celluloid.
If it is gilt brass, it is in very good condition.

That's right in my taste :woot:
I'll vote for carved ivory! The metal work is VERY good...:cyclops::peeking:
The sycamore/samara winged seeds were a popular decor during Art Nouveau period:)

Sweet! It's a shame you are missing one of the pink stones, you may be able to find a replacement :)

It looks like the stone is there, it just doesn't show very well maybe because of the angle or lighting (if you enlarge the pic you can see it).

The back shot seems to show an empty space.

It is also pinched so much the original stone wouldn't fit.

This is what I am seeing when I enlarge it; it looks to me like there is a stone there (hope this pastes in correctly). Maybe Busy_Bosco can confirm.

Don’t feel that way, Wenna! We all miss things. I, personally, am a “Mistake Machine” :hilarious:

Oh yea, I miss stuff like that all the time when I see something I really want. I have a bad habit of not looking it over carefully enough

WOW! Thank you all so much for the warm welcome and the knowledge!

@ Any Jewelry I think you are spot on with the Germanic origins. I live in Frederick City Maryland which has strong German roots going back to the 1700’s.

I found it at a thrift store for $3 and my wife rolled her eyes and told me I didn’t need “anymore junk” lol. Maybe she’s right, but I think it’s really neat and the history you have all provided was well worth the price of admission!

    Thank you everyone!

Yes, the girl is holding a basket of flowers in her arm (I can’t believe the needle thin basket handle isn’t broken), and sniffing a flower. The man is wafting a flower at his nose.
