Need Help Identifying Composition dolls

Discussion in 'Antique Discussion' started by Jacqueline Clubb, Sep 10, 2015.

  1. Hi, I bought these two composition dolls at a yard sale a few years ago.
The brunette one has a number written on the bottom of her foot..not sure what it means. There is some type of circle in the middle of her back. I'm curious what that is for also.

The baby with the molded hair has the word "vanity" on the back of her neck. I've searched and searched and have no idea if this is the name of a company or her name? Does anyone know? Any clue on the ages of these dolls?
    Thank you

THIS 1945 ad for a "Vanity" baby doll mentions "these little darling dolls by Vanity" so that is obviously the name of the dollmaker. I saw ads for Vanity baby dolls from approximately 1945-1950.

I found a 1947 reference to a Vanity Doll Company Inc in Brooklyn NY.

  3. Thank you! That's the only ad or anything I've ever seen with that company mentioned. :)

Probably of no help but my collectors doll encyclopedia mentions
    1. "Vanitie Dolls" 1921-22+ Mutual Doll Co and Cameo Doll Co thereafter distributed by Borgfeldt. Made of wood pulp composition (Spanish style lady doll copyright Joseph L Kallus
    2. "Vanity Fair Dolls" 1901 (china head and limbs, muslin body

Here are a couple of additional bits of information about Vanity, of which Samuel Gersh was the president...

The other doll is a typical mama doll. The circle in the middle of her back is the crier. She has tin eyes. She was probably made in the thirties.

  8. Thanks..It's fun learning about their history. :)
