    Hi

I am trying to find out more about this item, I literally have no idea what it is or where/when it originates. The metal figure is very heavy and dense (possibly cast iron?) and is what appears to be some kind of soldier in battle gear with a cloak a shield and a hand weapon of some kind. Maybe someone will be more familiar with it because right now I’m stumped and it would definately be interesting to learn more about it.

    Thanks guys!

For some reason, none of your photographs were taken straight on so difficult to evaluate figure but... possibly meant to be a Greek or Roman diety.

It is not a religious relic & does not, in these photos, appear to be any of the Greek/Roman gods. Has a more Nordic look to me, or maybe someone like Vercingetorix or Ambiorix, if anyone in particular is meant at all.

Is the red on or under the surface?

I agree, more like one of the Celtic or Germanic guys with that long cloak, and it looks like he has a moustache. He is charming.
L0z, there seems to be a rusty screw or something in the base. Are the statue and the base two separate pieces, or was he attached to something else maybe?

'Our' Ambiorix with moustache and winged dragon helmet.

I'd say that the red is on the surface.

The figure is one solid piece, not sure what the rusty bit is, indeed maybe it was attached to something else originally. I'm not sure about it being lead as someone suggested. It has a weight of lead but im sure lead is softer....this is really dense and solid....wonder how old it actually is..?

The detail is very degraded. But I thought his shoes are sandals and is the building maybe the Parthenon?

Most likely a zinc alloy, since zinc oxide is white and powdery like the thing in the pictures. Scrape a little on the base and see if it exposes a silvery metal.

I did as you suggested and I was quite suprise how soft the metal was when I began to scrape. It does reveal a silvery metal - if you would have not mentioned zinc alloy I’d of guessed it was lead, so I suppose it comes down to whether or not zinc alloy is soft or not and does establishing this help at all with regards to identifying it?

    Many thanks

It could be lead, lead oxide is white. Zinc is harder than lead. If u must know which get the specific gravity, getting volume from water displacement and accurate weight from a scale, then divide weight by volume. Use units so answer is in pounds per sq. Ft. or equivalent in other units, the s.g.’s of all metals are on web.

I have cleaned the piece bringing it back to the original metal. Hopefully this may help it be better identified? I must say the face looks Chinese to me....

    ....any further thoughts I wonder
