Picked up this chair at an estate sale and wondering what it is ? I was told by someone it was an actual medieval chair. Marking on the chair are J L ii with stars in between the letters. There is absolutely no metal in the construction of the chair and has large pegs in the back, markings are stamped

With that 2 board seat, this would be a late 19th or early 20th century piece. A church or other institutional origin is possible but it is also possible is that it is a dining chair. The styling is mostly Renaissance Revival which would typically place this to about 1870-80. However, something like this could be made later. This would be particularly true if for a church, library, or similar setting.

Looks like it might have had a velvet seat cushion at one time.

yah I dont see anywhere that a cushion has been attached at any point..no nail holes or anything where a velvet seat cushion would attach

    I'd call it Gothic Revival.

While this does have some Gothic elements, I think the chair is primarily Renaissance Revival. This is more what I think of when visualizing Gothic Revival.

    or this .........

The legs on the OP's chair are pure RR, as is that arched pediment top with upward finials. The quatrefoil cut-out is a common gothic design element. That center arch is more Moorish in design. The chair is really a bit of a Victorian mish-mash.

This modern reproduction, is the closest I could find to the OP's chair. It is being marketed as Gothic revival and does have more Gothic elements to it than the OP's. I would not call it pure by any means.

I've always thought of those chairs as refugees from Victorian church buildings.(LOL)
