    Hi all. Just wondering if you could all help me identify another piece. Here is a compote standing at about 14 inches tall featuring a leprechaun a cherub, a dragon/griffin and a face. It is marked with an M. Does anyone have any ideas. Makers? Period? Style?

    Not a leprechaun. You have a winged lion, not a dragon. Pan holding the bowl with the child. He's not a cherub, no wings. The face looks like the Green Man. Very odd symbology.

    Agree with OBB's comments with just a couple of tweaks.

    A griffin is part lion, part eagle, so griffin it is.

    In this context, the child would be described as a putto.

    Pan - or at least a satyr, but I agree probably Pan - echoes images of Hercules holding up the earth.

    Along with the Green Man, it is indeed a very odd mix, although it tends toward a celebration of wine. Have seen vessels of similar shape made in precious metal with a section of polished nautilus shell for the bowl.

    1 little naked (or nearly so) wingless boy = a putto
    2 or more of the same = putti.

    @Ownedbybear hi!

    I think probably Bacchus, not Green Man

    And hey, guess what?! According to Beveragedaily.com:

    Bacchus is Back! Moderate wine worship may be good for your kidneys!

    Why can't our organs agree on anything?

    I don't think he's a griffin/gryphon. No beak. They have eagle heads and front claws, the rest being leonine. That fellow has a nose, teeth and paws on him.

    He may well be Bacchus/Dionysus, that did cross my mind as those are vine leaves. In that case, the horned person would be a satyr. There are images of Bacchus/Dionysus with satyrs and putti. The winged lion would also make sense in that context.

    I don't really know who-all Bacchus hung out with, but he did seem to party with a winged lion... His transportation.

    How interesting, @Bronwen
    The two cups are so similar.
