Digged up these two old paintings which I had hidden away. I always thought they could be French but never knew for sure until today. I started to take pics and thought let me open them up to see if I can find any extra info. They are both from the same artist and signed with the monogram MD.

It turns out that they had some writing on the back. They are several circled numbers and some are crossed out.

This makes me believe that these could be catalog numbers and they may have been displayed in several exhibitions or so. Is this assumption correct??

    One reads
    'Le Marchea Bandol' 21 p (page) 175is
    The other reads
'Surrey La Plage Renecros' 24 p (page) 175is

(I know the letter P stand for the word 'page' because it was also written on the back of the paintings) could 'p 175is' refer to a book or catalogue?

Bandol and Renecros are places in the south of France. So this must been a French artist who lived or visited Bandol area. Any info/input is welcome.

    Ben

    Very nice, summer holidays.
Both are of Bandol, 'le marché à Bandol' - the market in Bandol, 'sur la plage Renécros' - at Renécros beach, Renécros beach is one of the beaches of Bandol in Provence.

Just conjecture but the page notations on the back make me think that these were possibly used as illustrations in a book.

That is indeed possible. Here to find out and to learn. I hope/think we can solve this because of the many references and titles. I myself are on a dead end. That's why I'm here.

I will upload some better pictures from before I removed them from the frame. Hope that will help. Looks like they were painted in a specific style with similair colors. Could this maybe help to pinpoint the artist.

They looked to me like they were framed in the late 70s or 80's and the seal tape around it was complete dried out came off. The frame also has some references and numbers which could point to a catalogue number or exhibition? It really puzzles me.

Strange. Sorry don't know why some pics are upside-down.
