Happy New Year everyone. Picked up this vase years ago. It's in bad shape (repaired) as you can see, but hoping I can get some clues on what it is. Thanks!

I answered quickly this morning thinking someone would come and expand on my answer.

Nippon is what Japan was called prior to the US import laws, which happened in 1891. At that time items coming into the US had to have the country of origin marked on them.
Since your piece does not show any markings that I can see, I am assuming it is pre-1891.

Pottery coming from Japan is named for the region it was made in.
I think your piece is Satsuma.

Hopefully, someone will be along who can explain it better than me or correct anything I have misstated.

Pat, only want to say Japan is still Nippon to Japanese people (Nihon-jin)!

Yes, I sort of knew that in the back of my mind.
    Thanks.

What I can see from the Inscription is "大日本京都" (Great Japan, Kyoto). Could you post more photos of the Kanji? The crackles and the green in the glaze are not typical for Satsuma, it is rather some other stoneware with Satsuma-style decoration. As to age, I would think maybe late 19th, early 20th c?

On the last picture the writing is upside down. I can make out "田", "da" on the far right, which could be the second character of Nishida or Koshida which were Kyoto based makers. Is there another character not shown in the picture further right? After that the character "", "Sei", "made by", after that "", "left", "?", "一", "one" and "?". (? for characters I cannot identify).
