Not normally the sort of thing I buy but it had a certain charm even though it was covered in black gunk when I found it. Any ideas as to what, who, when, where - and why?
Underneath the gold squiggles on its base, the numbers 6373 are pressed into the clay.
Sorry for the rotten pics. My tablet doesn't know how to focus.

    Hi,
Reminds me of the toothbrush holder for the chamber wash set.

Thanks. That one looks like it might have the same number pressed into the clay too but a different decorator's mark. I guess the auction house didn't have much of a clue about it either.

Hi Nutcracker and welcome! I've come across a lot of these cups over the years and rarely see one with a manufacturer's mark. It's one of those pieces that came over by the boatload and nobody at the time cared much who made it. Germany seems to have been the biggest producer. If selling I'd try Germany, late 1800's - early 1900's, pink lustre, rope decoration. I've never seen that rope handle before - it's neat! Despite how pretty it is it won't bring much I'm afraid.

Thanks for the information Don. I only paid 20p for it so not too worried about turning a profit.

I think that Don has it spot on.

Often found as souvenir wear, larger ones with mottos or transfer print scenes.

Would have had a matching saucer.

Worth most when having a rare transfer print.

Ratsy sure as heck found its sister. Enlighten me, what's a cabinet cup? One meant for display only? On a high shelf in her kitchen, my grandmother had several colorful decorative plates my mother always referred as Bavarian china, although the one I took home is not marked.

Hangs-around looks-cutes is what I call them. Sure looks like one to me. It wouldn't be very practical, but when it was new it would have been pink and shiny.

You didn't give size, I'm suspecting somewhere around 3" tall.
As Don and rhi said, most likely German 1880s -1900.
Also as said, should have a saucer.

Would have been called a Demi Cup and Saucer.

I've had a few as well. They came with equally fancy saucers. A huge variety of designs. They'd make a very interesting collection.
