Hey guys, went to an antique fair yesterday and got exited. Bought a few stuff:

    Ww1 Iron Cross
    The Queen's Royal Lancers badge
    Adjutant General's Corp
Brazilian army Intendence collar badge (bought a pair, but they are both the same side)

How do you know they are authentic?

Re the iron cross: I’m no expert but I’m told The decorations (crown etc) are all black on an original. Did you test it with a magnet? The center part is iron and magnetic, the outside is silver and non-magnetic. Maker’s code no. Is on the suspension ring. There’s no black silver tarnish on the “silver” part of yours. Look at edges of the medal, is made as a sandwich so you will see the two halves separated by a very thin line all the way around. Again, just stuff Ive heard but from trusted sources.

RE The Queen's Royal Lancers badge looks like a cheap souvenir piece, casting flash not cleaned, the lettering is not clear(out of focus photo?),casting quality poor.

Looked at the “iron cross” some more and it looks like a pot metal casting with obvious flaws around outside edge and in the black area. There are pits, sunken areas, etc. I’m now 99% sure the medal is a cheap repro., but if you didn’t pay much for it, no matter. If you paid much it may be worth trying to get a refund if the seller represented it as authentic.

Well, I was coming here now to say that... the medal is fake... I knew that the ribbon was not original when I bought it, but I thought the medal could be... I was wrong... I should have known better than that, I got too exited and did not pay full atention to details... well... we learn by our mistakes...
Thankfully I did not pay much for it (about 35 dollars, wich is 120 in Brazilian money, I have checked on online auctions and it was being sold for around R$150, wich is close to 50 dollars, so the price was not that far)

The picture is out of focus, it is the same quality as the other one. They both have the Firmin & Son mark on the back.

I was going to mention earlier that the cross is heavily counterfeited and the ribbons can be bought online.

However there are many genuine Iron Crosses that still survive in very good condition, some with the swastika emblem, because they were stored away and not put on display due to embarrassment.

I see many at antique fairs, I walk away.

The Lancers badge is fine: they aren't exactly top quality to start with.

Good news on the "Iron Cross".
I contacted the seller yesterday, he said that he told me it was a replica (he did not, also he said it was original when I specifically asked) but that if I bought it for an original he would give me my money back, so he is coming today to refund me.
Since he was willing to give me my money, I didn't think it was worth arguing that he said it was original.

Watch out with buying WWII German military medals, any militaria from NS Germany. There is a lot more fake stuff out there than real.

Some of it straight from Ali and are easy to spot. Mind you, some fakes can only be identified by real specialists (I'm not one).

Anyone who is not an expert themselves should only buy such items from reputable dealers.

Yes I did, he only wanted me to pay the credit card fees, because according to him, he said it was a replica...
