    Hi everyone!

I found this little gem in a flea market in the Netherlands, and im curious if anyone could tell a bit more about it. The dimensions are L:36cm, W:32cm, H: 80cm.

Is this actually an old piece? Any info on the particular style? Where was it made? How old could it be? Is it made from oak?

Any responses are greatly appreciated! Thank you for your time!

It is a 1930s oak nightstand, one of a pair. I usually see these with a marble top, so I wonder if the top on this one was replaced.
Replaced or not, it works, and it can still be used as a small cabinet without its mate.
Since you found it in the Netherlands, and we see a lot of them here, it is likely Dutch made.

    Hi Any Jewelry,
That was a quick response, thank you for that!
Ive noticed those marble tops during an online search. Despite the color of the top looking like the rest of the stand, you could be on point. The top plate doesnt lie flat, and the insde wood pieces that the top is mounted upon looks a bit newer than the rest of the stand.
We feel in love with it right away and will find a nice place for it in our house.

Yes, I noticed that, it could indeed be due to it not being original.
Pieces have a history, things get replaced for one reason or another.
That is the most important factor when buying vintage and antique items.:)

I’d go a bit earlier on this. It’s quarter-sawn oak on the cusp between post-Victorian and Craftsman, ca. 1910 give or take. It probably did not have a marble top; the later the date the more likely that the oak top is original.

Very interesting Ghopper! Thank you for your reply and the provided info, I will be researching the quarter-sawn oak you mentioned

Wouldnt this have been for a chamber pot ?

Ghopper's analysis is in line with mine, were this American. Given that it is likely Dutch, I can not say definitively. I don't know if this would fit with Amsterdam School furniture but the pulls make me think so. Might put it a bit later.

Designwise it is borderline Amsterdam School imo. I wouldn't call it AS, but others may. It is the same period, also the same period as Art Deco.

If I saw it in the UK, I'd think 20s into 30s. I'd also call it transitional A&C into Art Deco. Nice grain on that.

Thanks, everyone, for your thoughts! They were so interesting to read, and I now have a number of starting points to do some research.

Ownedbybear, does A&C stand for Arts & Crafts?

Yes, apologies I should have put it in full. Arts and Crafts.

I'm East Coast USA and not an expert, but I'd have figured the wooden bits at about 1920 too. Tail end Arts and Crafts. It would be far too late here for a marble top, but it's a Dutch piece so I have no idea. I'd put a lamp on it and call it solved, if I had it.

No worries! I was able to figure it out and am thankful for the information. I had not heard of the AC Movement before, and it's quite an interesting read.
